As reported yesterday, Microsoft changed the way how they license Windows 10 to their OEM partners. But buckle in folks, the changes just keep on coming. In what looks like an effort to push Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 owners to upgrade, Microsoft has officially announced that Office 2019 will only wo. The new Office 2019 will be released for Windows 10 (and newest LTSC of Windows Server) and Apple Mac OS X (most recent version according to Microsoft) only. Commercial volume license customers may access Office 2019 starting today while all other customers, home users and businesses alike, will be able to buy and install the new version of.

That's only the tip of the iceberg though. Unlike previous version of Office that came with 10 years of support, Office 2019's support lifecycle is shortened to five years of mainstream support and two years of extended support. Additionally, the client applications are only available with a Click-to-Run installer. However, Microsoft will continue to provide a MSI installer for the server applications.

I don't see how this pushes anyone to upgrade. There really isn't any need to 'buckle in'. Users are always free to keep using Windows XP (wat), Windows 7, Windows whatever and any version of office released while in mainstream support. Office 2010, 2013, and Office 2016 work great. Windows 7 works fine. Windows 8 works fine. Windows 10 works fine. Each OS version, just like the competition, have flaws or annoyances. Always have, always will. No need to sit around and whine - if you don't like the OS you use feel free to write your own and see how it goes.
Microsoft is designing Office 2019 to work with Windows 10 instead a gimped version that is unstable or missing features in older outdated OS releases. It is really simple.

You cannot mix bitness. Office, Visio, and Project must all be either 32- or 64-bit.
You cannot mix Office software installed with different types of installers. All must be Click to Run or all must be Windows (MSI) Installer.
- These use only the Click to Run Installer:
  - Office 365, Office 2019, Visio 2019, and Project 2019.
  - Office 2013 and 2016 installed from the Office 365 portal.
- These use only the Windows (MSI) Installer:
  - Visio and Project versions 2013 and earlier.
  - Office 2013 and 2016 downloaded as ISOs from the Campus Software Library.
- These use either Click to Run or Windows (MSI) installers:
  - Visio 2016 and Project 2016
You cannot mix different year versions (2013, 2016, 2019, etc.). Office, Visio, and Project must all be the same year version, with the exception for Office 365 noted below.
- Any Microsoft software installed with a Click to Run installer can be installed alongside Office 365. That would include Visio 2019 or later, Project 2019 or later, and the Click to Run versions of Visio 2016 and Project 2016. If you have both Project and Visio installed, their versions must be the same as each other.
